About this log
Keep a simple, repeatable written record of your portable fire extinguisher checks. The log is a set of reusable master sheets: give every extinguisher an ID, list it on the inventory, and print a fresh monthly grid for each building or area every year.
The monthly inspection grid tracks 10 extinguishers across 12 months, with a date and initials box for each month. Page 3 explains the 9-point monthly check and the inspection and testing schedule in plain language, with the rule paragraph shown for each cited item. When an extinguisher fails a check, take it out of service and log it on the Corrective Action Log until it is back in service or replaced.
This log helps with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157(e) and (f) inspection, maintenance and testing requirements. Rule excerpts are quoted word for word from the eCFR (29 CFR 1910.157, version dated Oct 29, 2026). Page 2 explains who the rule covers (1910.157(a)), including when only paragraphs (e) and (f) apply and that some employers are exempt from all or part of the rule (1910.157(b)). It is a log template: the employer remains responsible for meeting all requirements, following the extinguisher manufacturer's instructions and any local fire code, and using a qualified servicing company where needed. Does this log help with OSHA requirements? Yes. It helps with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157(e) and (f) inspection, maintenance and testing requirements and includes word-for-word excerpts of the standard. A form can't do the job on its own: your company stays responsible for the requirements that apply to it.
How many extinguishers fit on one sheet? The monthly grid holds 10 extinguishers for a full year, and the inventory lists 21. Use another sheet for each additional group, numbering the sheets in the header.
